Before I took the plunge and joined the industry ten years ago, I was no exception to those who wonder what goes on in the gambling industry. These stories have come from my years of experience working behind the curtain.

Today’s tale comes from my time as a support agent and one of the stupidest betting conversations I’ve ever had with a customer. It was back in the 2015/16 Premier League season, and Leicester were storming ahead to win the league and create a football fairy tale.

There are five games to go before they’re crowned champions, and only if they lost all five games and Arsenal won all of their five would Leicester not win the league. Now, a few months before, people had been calling to cash out their £50 at 5000-1 odds of Leicester winning the league, which would have paid out £250k, but months before, people were cashing them out for £60k.

However, with five games to go, nobody was cashing out anymore except the chap who called up just before the 1st match of the 5. After security, etc, he tells me his wife wants him to cash out (The bet was always going to win him £250k at this point). With the request, I message the sports team, and I can safely say I have never seen them reply so quickly with an offer of £100k, which I present to the customer and state five times on a recorded call do you want to cash out for this price, he does, and he gets the money.

After the call, I told my colleague what had just happened, laughing about how the biggest idiot in the world had just cost himself £150k. Once Leicester went undefeated for those five games and won the league, a lot of people made £250k, and of course, we got one angry call from, you guessed it, Mr £100k demanding his other £150k; I’ve never heard someone disconnect a call faster once his previous call was played back to him.

I’m sure he and his wife had a few heated arguments about how they cost themselves £150k more, but hey, he still made £100k for the price of £50.

See you soon
